A pressurized reaction method for continuous production of L-alanine from L-aspartic acid using immobilized Pseudomonas dacunhae cells has been developed. To industrialize this method, reaction kinetics at elevated pressure were investigated and compared with those of the conventional reaction under atmospheric pressure. The reaction rate under elevented pressure was more rapid than that under atmospheric pressue. The reaction rate was affected by column dimensions(the ratio of column height to column diameter, H/D), except at high values of H/D. The stability of immobilized cells under pressurize was found to be similar to that in the conventional reaction. This method prevented the liberation of CO_2 formed as a by-product, and was of advantage for industrial production of L-alanine.
