A heat-exchange column equipped with horizontal tubes has been developed for immobilized cell reactions accompanied by generation of heat. The longitudinal temperature distributions and liquid flow characteristics of the column were investigated for the aspartase and fumarase reactions. Althogh the temperature at outlet of the column was higher than that of the inlet, it was lower than that of a column without a device for heat removal. The degree of liquid mixing in the column, estimated from device for heat removal. The degree of liquid mixing in the column, estimated from reacton data, was closer to plug flow. The heat-exchange column was shown to be favorable for exothermic immobilized cell reactons.
