When the L-13 strain was grown on N-acetylglucosamine or chitooligosaccharide as a carbon source, the strain produced mycelia-bound β-N-acetylglucosaminidase at an early stage of the growth much more than when grown on glucose. When both glucose and N-acetylglucosamine were used as carbon sources, glucose was utilized for growth in preference to N-acetylglucosamine and the induction of the enzyme was reduced. Acceleration of the uptake of N-acetylglucosamine in the medium was seen with mycelia having higher enzyme activity and an inhibitor of the enzyme prevented the uptake of the suger. Iodoacetic acid which had no effect on the enzyme activity was found to strongly prevent the uptake and the mycelial enzyme appears to have no direct relation to the uptake of N-acetylglucosamine.
