An alga, Oscillatoria sp., isolated from a stock culture of sirulina that originated from a lake in the Republic of Chad was very interesting because of its large spiral structure. In order to evaluate this strain for biomass production for human consumption, cultivation tests, filtration tests and chemical composition analysis were carried out, and a comparison was made with Spirulina platensis also isolated from the stock culture. In thre types of indoor cultivation tests, Oscilla oria sp. showed better growth. Almmost all cells of Oscillatoria sp. were caught by a sieve of 250 μm openings. On the other hand, a sieve of 37 μm openings was necessary for harvesting the the cells of S. platensis. Compared with S. platensis, the contents of total carotenoids and total phycobilis were greater in the sample of Oscillatoria sp. Results obtained in this study showed that Oscillatoria sp. was at least as good as S. platensis for biomass production. Further, some kunconvincng facts were revealed about the real state of affairs in the Chad lake.
