The effectiveness of medical treatment was examined in 123 patients with unstable angina (UA). Drug therapy has had beneficial effects in 62.5% of the patients before the introduction of nifedipine (up to 1968) and in 72.0% thereafter (1969 and after). Of the former group, 25% developed acute myocardial infarction (AMI), while it occurred in 18.7% of the latter. Of 43 patients who showed an ST elevation during an attack, 75.7% of those treated with calcium antagonists and 66.7% of those treated with other drugs demonstrated beneficial effects. The occurrence of AMI was 16.2% in the former group and 33.3% in the latter. Of 80 patients who showed an ST depression during an attack, 79.0% of those treated with calcium antagonists and 59.5% of those treated with other drugs demonstrated beneficial effects. The occurrence of AMI was 10.5% in the former group and 28.6% in the latter. In short, calcium antagonists were more effective than other drugs and the occurrence of AMI was less in patients treated with calcium antagonists than in those treated with other drugs in both types of UA. It is concluded from these results that calcium antagonists were effective in patients with UA.
