The subject rotating light fixture was presented to the feudal government of Japan in the (17)^<th> century by the Dutch trading house located in Japan at the time. The original bearing was replaced with a thrust tapered roller bearing in 1910,around the time Timken obtained a patent for a radial tapered roller bearing. Roller bearings existed in Europe as early as in the (17)^<th> century. An analysis of a 1980 repair report concerning this light fixture bearing was performed and an onsite investigation carried out in order to examine the bearing's function. Proposals are offered from the viewpoint of industrial archaeology on the preservation of mechanical systems of cultural treasures.
