A new air bearing linear actuator with a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) was investigated for a precise head track following in a magnetic recording system. The actuator has a servo bandwidth of two times as wide as that of a conventional HDD (Heard Disk Drive). When a D-MIG (Double Metal In Gap) of 4 μm track width loaded on a 2.5 inch disk system, the tracking error was compressed down to a half of the general design value of one tenth of the track width.
