Thermal characteristics of microscale Au-Pt thin-film thermocouples were investigated by two-dimensional surface temperature measurements using fluorescence. A CCD camera detected the scattered intensity of fluorescent particles on the thermocouple's surface as reference to the excitation intensity excited by a pulsed xenon lamp. The Langmuir-Blodgett technique was applied to coat the fluorescent particles in a monolayer on the surface of thin-film thermocouples. The junction-type thin-film thermocouples which were easily fabricated had no ability to show the endothermal phenomenon, due to large thermal resistance at thejunction. Optimization of thin-film thickness and width, and reduction in the thermal resistance resulted in fabricating the contact-type thin-film thermocouples which exhibited the Peltier effect. The wide-width thermocouple powered by the electric current from Au to Pt accomplished the high endothermal capacity in a wide region of the Au area, while the intense endothermal region was obtained in the Pt area when the current was supplied from Pt to Au.
