Transient natural convection of water near its density maximum in a square enclosure having thermally insulated opposite horizontal walls and vertical hot and cold walls was numerically investigated. It has been reported in previous studies that the flow pattern in the steady state changes with the initial temperature for a large Rayleigh number. However, the critical Rayleigh number, (Rα)_<cr> , I. E. the smallest Rayleigh number over which the flow in the steady state is dependent on the initial water temperature, has not been specified because systematical studies have not been conducted so far. The purpose of the present study is to determine the critical Rayleigh number and the effect of the value of Rayleigh number on the transient temperature and velocity distributions. As a result, it has been shown that ; (Rα)_<cr> exists between 1.3x10^6 and 1.4x10^6, the flow is symmetric for Rα < (Rα)_<cr> in steady state about the vertical center line of the cavity, irrespective of the value of the initial temperature, and it becomes asymmetric for Rα ≥ (Rα)_<cr>, depending on the initial temperature.
