In this study, the mechanism of critical heat flux (CHF) for the laterally half-heated round tube was explained from the viewpoint of rivulet formation. We proposed that the non-uniformity of the heat load in the lateral direction lead the liquid film breakdown into the rivulets, and the CHF reached when the rivulet formation occurred. The critical condition for the rivulet formation was derived on the assumption that both the continuous film and the rivulets carried the same mass flow and the total (surface and kinetic) energy, while at the same time, the rivulet exhibited in the rivulet configuration in the local minimum. Using the critical criterion, the minimum liquid film thickness depending on the contact angle of the surface was determined. Good agreement was gained by comparing the calculated value and the experimental data.
