The chip behavior that means the sticking at the cutting edge, movements after cut, flying directions and so on influences on tool wear and surface finish quality. The transient phenomenon of chip generations and behavior in milling and hobbing are investigated by using high speed video camera. In many cases, the chip flies rotationally after that the top end of chip touches with the work surface. Observation of chip generations in millings clarifies that the chip flow on the cutting edge changes at the corner due to the interference of chips from both sides cutting edges. Moreover, the chip behavior in gear hobbing of finish process and in hobbing of a special blank workpiece with one tooth space is investigated. New visual findings such as the chip interference on rake surface and the way of contact with the work surface can be obtained.
