The planning for the allocation of tools and jobs to machine tools strongly affects the performance of Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS). In this paper we consider an FMS with a tool center and assume that a job can visit only one machine. Two tool-change methods, "Augmented Magazine Method" and "Magazine Carrier Method", are proposed for the tool change between the tool center and machines when necessary. For effective production in such FMS, how many tools to prepare in the tool center becomes important issue. A method based on the greedy search is proposed to solve the problem and its applicability is evaluated. The allocation of tools and jobs is processed with a procedure based on auction method. By simulation, we investigate the characteristics and effectiveness of the proposed methods.
