The author attempted to clarify whether ciliary activity of respiratory mucosa plays a role in development of bronchial asthma, or not. Guinea pigs were sensitized by insufflation of "Maiko", a dust from Amorphophalus Konjac, which is offending allergen of Konjac bronchial asthma. By using ammonium sulfate fractionation, three fractions A, B and C were obtained from "Maiko". Fraction A is a water souble component of "Maiko" precipitated at 90% ammonium sulfate saturation and fraction B is a water soluble compmoent of "Maiko" precipitated at 40% ammonium sulfate saturation. Fraction C is a component which does not precipitate at 60% ammonium sulfate saturation and precipitates at 90% ammonium sulfate saturation. Then the actions of these fractions on ciliary activity of respiratory epithelium from "Maiko"-sensitized animals were investigated in vitro. Fraction B, which contains a causative allergen of Konjac bronchial asthma intensively suppressed ciliary movement, whereas fraction C, which contains antigen against skin reaction in the patient, showed scarcely any effect. Histamine and acetylcholine were very weak in suppressive action on ciliary activity. These results suggest that also when "Maiko"-sensitized animals are exposed to antigen in vivo, ciliary activity of its respiratory mucosa will decrease, inducing, as a result, asthmatic attack. It is generally acceptable that histamine and acetylcholine play an important role as the so-called chemical mediator in allergic disease, but in the present experiments, these drugs showed very weak action on ciliary activity. Therefore, the fact suggests that suppressing effect of antigen on ciliary activity does not occur through these chemical mediators.
