The lyophilized rat muscle membrane was used for immunizing rabbit, and myopathic changes were succesfully produced. The serum gammagloblin, circulating lymphocytes, and peritoneal macrophages derived from myopathic rabbits as well as from the normal rabbits were transferred into the anterior tibial muscle of normal rats. The resultant tissue reactions in the muscles were estimated in vivo mainly by observing the morphological changes of motor end-plate. The histological findings, including muscle fibers, infiltrated cells, terminal axon innervation and various histochemical stainings, were also studied. The most effective in producing myopathic changes in rat were the peritoneal macrophages obtained from myopathic rabbit, with the circulating lymphocytes the next. Serum gamma-globulin fraction of the same rabbit could, though minimal, elicit the same kinds changes. According to the kind of substance employed, the myopathic and normal groups were paired. In all of them, the difference of diameters of motor end-plates were cleary significant with p-values of less than 0.001. In summary, the experimental myopathy was produced successfully in the rabbits by immunizing them with isolated rat muscle membrane, and the peritoneal macrophages obtained from these rabbits were most effective in transferring myopathic changes.
