The dynamic response of a nonlinear vibratory system with some of its modes degenerated may differ qualitatively from the usual harmonic response. To show that this is indeed the case, a rectangular membrane with its neighboring sides in a such ratio that its two modes are degenerated, is taken up. After presenting a general method of analysis, the response of a rectangular membrane with (1,2) and (3,1) modes degenerated, subjected to harmonic excitation, is investigated. The analysis reveals that, due to interaction between the modes, the response in fact differs from the usual response. It is shown for example that an additional branch appears in the response curve, that the nodal lines can move, and that an almost periodic motion can occur. An analog computer analysis and an experimental one are also conducted and the validity of the theoretical analysis is confirmed.
