A nonlinear nonsymmetric forced oscillation induced in a circular membrane subjected to harmonic excitation , is examined using a typical example. For theoretical analysis, modal equations are first derived from the governing partial differential equations. Then, on basis of these modal equations, a forced oscillation is discussed near one primary resonance point, at which the modes having one diametral nodal line resonate. The analysis reveals that, in addition to the usual harmonic oscillation, a traveling wave occurs. This occurs because two modes which exist with the same natural frequency and with the same shape but are shifted circumferentially from each other by angle π/2, are induced simultaneously with the phase lag π/2. Experimental analysis, conducted with use of a thin steel membrane, confirms the validity of the theoretical analysis.
