Effects of Radius of Curvature and Hardened Depth on Surface Durability of Induction-hardened SCM440 Steel Roller

Sliding rolling contact fatigue tests were performed using induction-hardened steel rollers with four different hardened depths and three different diameters as tooth surface models. The results were discussed in terms of the amplitude of ratio of orthogonal shear stress to Vickers hardness. In these experiments, the surface failure made was spalling regardless of the roller diameter and the hardened depth. The depth of spalling crack initiation agreed with the depth where the amplitude reached the peak. The surface durability tended to increase as the roller diameter decreased : There was the optimum hardened depth for surface durability at any roller diameter and this was related to the mechanism of spalling crack initiation.
