A calculation method for the contribution of each element (bearing, etc.) to the logarithmic decrement in a rotor-bearing system is shown which is based on the relation between the dissipative energy and the logarithmic decrement. By applying the method to a rotor-bearing system which is subjected to a fluid dynamic destabilizing force, the stability of the system is evaluated. The effects of the axial location of disk, the stiffness of rotor and the anisotropy of bearing characteristics on the stability of the system are described and the contribution of each element to the stability is discussed.
