A new method for gasoline engine diagnosis has been proposed. It has two features ; one is the utilization of the combustion variables (such as cylinder pressure) and the other is the introduction of statistical treatments into the diagnosis. Through the statistical analysis of the experimental data of cylinder pressure diagram, discrimination was made between normal and abnormal conditions concerning engine output and ignition timing. In addition, by comparing the values of cylinder pressure with the standard values, we could determine the causes (such as ignition timing, air-fuel ratio) of the abnormal operation quantitatively. It was shown that this method is reliable and readily available in engine diagnosis.
