A new diagnostic method under accelerating running is described, introducing linear discriminant functions to discriminate between normal and abnormal engine conditions from time series data patterns of Pmi. The selections of various abnormal conditions concerning the accelerator pump in the carburetor and ignition advance have been precisely carried out using the test engine. In addition, by adopting linear discriminant functions with high reliability and the relearning method, accurate discrimination and flexibility in the diagnosis have been achieved. Consequently, it is shown that this method applied to the linear discriminant functions is precise and reliable in the engine diagnosis under accelerating running.
