The Wear of Steel in Lubricating Oil under Varying Load

In the present paper, the wear rates of a steel in lubricating oil are discussed under two step loads and two loads repeated block history. The wear of steel is considered to be due to the surface fatigue under lubricated conditions except the severe condition accompanying the seizure. The results under two step loads show that the wear rate is a behavior quite analogous to those of fatigue, especially of fatigue crack propagation under two step stresses. The change of residual stress measured by X-ray diffraction and the change of surface hardness well explain the results. The wear rate under two loads repeated block history can be estimated quantitatively from the results and the considerations above mentioned. The noteworthy fact is that the wear rate is considerably lower under higher load applied periodically than under constant load.
