Concerning the strength of railroad wheels to which the tread brake is applied, thermal stresses in wheel discs and thermal cracks at the tread are very important factors. In this paper, a digital computer program using the finite element method is developed to determine the effect of wheel contour on thermal stresses induced. Although the thermal stresses in wheel disc become smaller as the offset decreases and the disc thickness increases, these no longer increase when the offset is over 20 mm. On the other hand, the thermal stresses at the tread are affected by restraint of the disc against thermal expansion of the rim of wheel. The stresses at the tread of wheel with negative offset of disc become greater than those of wheel of positive offset. This is caused by the effect of the rigidity of flange and non-uniformity of temperature distribution in the rim.
