Generally, the Geometry of a deformed body is unknown in advance except in some special cases. Then, the elastic finite deformation theory of shells subject to large displacement gradient should be dealt with in the undeformed state or the reference state. Hence, fundamental equations for general large deformation shell theory and a membrane theory in large strain are derived for arbitary geometry of the reference state, and the physical meaning of the tensor description is shown for convenience of practical applications. The derived strain-displacement relations and equilibrium equations in tensor form of the reference state are also applicable to the general problems of finite strain such as elastic-plastic analysis and creep analysis by being rewritten in the incremental form.
