The granular media are deformed plastically by action of the cutting blade of the vehicle machinery: bulldozers, ploughs etc. They collapse on the slip surface, swell up and crumble down in front of the blade. As this process is affected by the shape of the blade, it is important to investigate the three dimensional deformation of the media. A visualization technique of flow with the aid of the glass osmotic method is introduced to investigate the behavior of the media. It is shown that the slip surface developed by the rectangular blade moving symmetrically in the non-cohesive media can be represented by three planes: two vertical planes generated by the side edges and a plane expanding forward from the tip. On the basis of these results, a three dimensional wedge theory is proposed to calculate the force acting on the blade.
