Indentation hardness (Rockwell, Vickers, Knoop) of a vibrating body (SS-41 steel specimen of 20×20×135 mm) were investigated with a specially designed ultrasonic hardness tester (20 kHz, 500 W). Though the hardness reduction with vibration is observed fro every testing conditions, the reduction rate is remarkable for the alternatively displacing surfaces and for the pyramidal indenters. The hardness reduction at the vibration mode was explained qualitatively with the combined stress hypothesis proposed by the authers.
