A25-124 INDIRECT MEASUREMENT OF SLIP-VELOCITY BETWEEN SOLID WALL AND GAS FLOW AT HIGH KNUDSEN NUMBERS

Gas flows at high Knudsen numbers, which is common in micro fluidics, have been represented in a vacuum chamber, so that measurements are possible in handy dimension. The velocity slip between a solid wall and gas flow adjacent to it has been detected by a slight variation in friction due to wall shear stress by gas flow realized in a rotating Couette flow system. The results indicate that the slip occurred when Kn exceeded 3.0×10^<-3>, which is an order of magnitude smaller than knowledge obtained by numerical simulations in the past. The magnitude of the velocity slip was also found excessively large compared to the conventional believe. Although there are number of uncertain factors in the experiment, the present study has demonstrated that the observation of the velocity slip is possible in a device which is more convenient to handle with as compared to delicate micro-fluidic devises.
