The relationship between natural background radiation and cancer death in 329 cities and countries in Japan, was analyzed using external radiation survey and epidemiological data. Inspite of the lack of epidemiological data, a relationship of incidences of male and female stomach cancer death due to natural background radlation was observed. Carcinogenesis is the principle hazard from ionizing radiation and has been reported by many authors and well summerized in the BEIR report. Because of technical difiiculties, the greater part of data on carcinogenesis due to low dose, low dose rate, is data extrapolated from the results due to relatively high dose, high dose rate ; especially, in the experiments conducted humans. One method to overcome the difficulties is to study the effects of natural background radiation. Some studies on the biological effects by natural background radiatlon have been reported. The data on animals living in the areas with hlgh natural backgrounds radiation, is suggestive to the biological effects of low dose, low dose rate radiation. Carcinogenic effects of natural background radiation on human body, however, is not clear. The obscurity is based on the difficulties in obtaining exact epidemiological and hygienic data on inhabitants. Recently, two reports with a large scale and one report with comparatively small scale were published, though they still present several problems in gathering epldemiological and hygienic data.
