The effect of SiO_2 on the electrical conductivities of BaTiO_3 was studied. From 0.5 to 3.5 wt% of SiO_2 was added to BaTiO_3 and the mixture was sintered at 1300℃ for one hour. Specimens containing 0.5 to 3.0 wt% SiO_2 had an average grain diameter of 30 μm and the electrical conductivity of 10^<-2>S/m at room temperature, and showed PTC effect. On the other hand, specimens containing 3.5 wt% SiO_2 had an average grain diameter of 3 μm and low electrical conductivity of 10^<-11>S/m at room temperature, and did not show PTC effect. Thus, electrical properties depend on the SiO_2 content, and these experimental results were explained by changes in the average grain: diameter of the sintered BaTiO_3.
