A method, which incorporates the effects of long-range fluctuations into a singlethree-spin custer, is presented. The basic idea is to consider overlapping clusters in achain, in order to equally treat all neighboring three spins and also to take account ofthe long-range correlations beyond the cluster size. An approximate decimation isemployed, by which all spins of the chain are successively decimated and a renor-malized three-spin cluster is obtained. Numerical calculations of the internal energiesand the specific heats for spin 1 /2 systems are presented, and show that the present ap-proximation is valid for T: J /k..
