Transition in plane channel flow is numerically studied. The initial condition forthe velocity field is given as a superposition of random fluctuations on the mean veloci-ty. Cyclic boundary conditions are imposed for the velocity and pressure in thedownstream and spanwise directions. The no-slip boundary condition is imposed onthe walls. Computations are carried out both with and without subgrid scale (SGS)modeling, and the major objective of the ptesent paper is the comparison betweenthem. Consequently, two modes of transition from laminar to turbulent are showndepending on the Reynolds number and the amplitude of disturbances. Horse-shoetype vortices observed in experiments are reproduced numerically, and their detailedstructure is investigated.
