Interplay of Phase Separations and Aggregations in Solutions of Rodlike Polymers

A theory is introduced to describe phase sep?rrations in solutions of end-to-end aggregateswhich are f'ormed by interumolectrar physical bonding betxveen rodlike tnolecules. In these soltrtiozas we ha,ve three different phase transitions: self'-associations, jchase separations and naolecularorientations. On the basis of' the Flory-Abe tlaeory for pol3zdisperse systetns of' rodlike particles,we CX2ll11lIl(2 the equilibriuna soltrtion properties. By ttsing tlae naultiple-chenaical eqtnilibritrtaacondttnorus f'or the raaolectrlar associations, we derive the size distribution of' the end-to-end aggregates in an isotropic and in a neraaatic phase. NVe show that the etad-to-end aggregates catusean netaaatic-isotropic phase transition 2lS well as the new types of phase sejcarations. For variousvalues of the ?tssociation constant, we calctmlate phase diagrams in the tenaperattrre-concentrationplane.
