A systematic study has been naade on the metal-instrlator (Ml) transition of the doubly de-generate Hubbard model (DHM) in the paramagnetic ground state, by using the slave-bosonmean-field theory which is eqtrivalent to the Gtrtzwiller approximation (GA). For the case ofinfinite electron-electron interactions, we obtain the an?tlytic solution, which becon?es exact inthe limit of infinite spatial ditnension. On the contrary, the finite-interaction case is investigatedby numerical methods using the siznple-ctrbic model with the nearest-neighbor hopping. Themass-enhancement factor, Z, is shown to increase divergently as one approaches the integer fill-lIlgS (,v = l, 2, 3), at which the Ml transition takes place, N being the total number of electrons. The calculated N dependence of Z is compared with the observed specific-heat coefficient, '7, ofSrj .La.Ti03 which is reported to significantly increase as :x approaches unity.
