A slave-boson functional-integral rnethod has been developed for the Hubbard model witharbitrary, orbital degeneracy D. Its saddle-point mean-field theory is equivalent to the Gutzwillerapproximation, as in the case of single-band Hubbard model. Our theory is applied to thedoubly degenerate (D : 2) model, whose paramagnetic state has been studied by numericalcalculations. The effect of the exchange interaction on the metal-insulator (Ml) transition isdiscussed. The critical interaction for the Ml transition is analytically calculated as functions oforbital degeneracy and electron occupancy.
