Low Temperature Cubic-Tetragonal Phase Transition in CuV_2S_4 Spinel Compound

The low-temperature X-ray dif['raction study and the magnetization and the electrical resis-tivity measurements, were perfortned on the single phase polycrysttrlline spinel CuV3S,j. Thecrystal structttre was confirmed to have a normal cubic spinel structure with a:9.809 A andu:0.382 at 300 K. The splitting of the (400) plane was observed below 90 K, resulting in thecoherent ctmbic to tetragonal phase transition with c/a:0.997. Any additional lines due to thecharge density wave were not observed. The tetragonality c/a and the deforrnation potential ofsrinels fairlv well exrlained the tr?xnsition temrerature of 90 K and the sr>littinu of the 3d(de)orbit of about 15 men. Thus, the phase transition is explained by the cooperative Jahn-Tellereffect of V"(3d') in the octahedral site.
