Radial Distribution Studies of Tl-S Alloys in Liquid and Amorphous States

Neutron diffraction uneasurernents in liquid Tl.S1 . alloys with x : 0.67, 0.57, 0.50, 0.33 and0.29 have been carried otrt to obtain their short-range structures. For the comparison, the amor-photrs structtrre of the alloys with 0.50 >.r >0.29 has been investigated also through X-raydiffraction rneastrrements. The liqtrid alloy has a chemical order relating to the crystalline phaseat x = 0.67 (corresponding to the composition of Tl2S), where the metal-nonmetal transitionoccurs. The liqtrid structure at the rest fotrr conapositions is considerably different frorn the cor-responding crystalline one. Conseqtrently, two distinct chemical orders appear in the compositionrange between Tl2S and S in the liquid state, i.e., the TlzS-like chemical order and sulf'ur linkagetrnit. On the other hand, crystalline chemical orders are rather retained in the amorphous state,for example, TlS4/2 tetrahedra in crystalline TIS and Tl2S5 rmolecular units in crystalline Tl2S5have been observed also in the amorphous state.
