Field evolution in a cavity including a time-varying dielectric is studied by deternaining theeffective Hamiltonian. For a uniform dielectric, the Hamiltonian is obtained explicitly, and weuse it to discuss photon creation in the case of an oscillating dielectric constant. It is shownthat the mode arnplification is similar to that in the case of a moving mirror, but the intermodetransition is suppressed. This property enables us to amplify a selected naode alone, unlike inthe moving mirror case.
