We study the classical vibration problem of a chain with spring constants which are modulatedin a quasiperiodic manner, i.e., a model in which the elastic energy is I kj (uj 1 - uj )', wherekj = 1-l- A cos 52'zro( j - 1 /2) -I-Nl and o is an irrational number. For A< l, it is shown analyticallythat the spectrum is absolutely continuous, i,e., all the eigen modes are extended. For A : 1,numerical scaling analysis shows that the spectrurn is purely singular continuous, i.e., all themodes are critical.
