The Marangoni instability due to a chemical absorption is studied theoretically bytaking into account the mass transfer of gas, solute and product resulting from an irreversible reaction. It is found that the critical Marangoni number for the inactiveproduct and the corresponding critical wavenumber change in a complicated mannerdepending on various parameters involved. Furthermore, it is found that the activesolute leads also to the Marangoni instability, where roles of the gas are discussed aswell. The Marangoni effect due to the product and that due to the solute are coupledso as to reinforce each other. Effects of the surface deformation give rise to anothertype of instability in the limit of zero wavenumber.
