The r>roblem of the onset of instability' driven bv surface tension sradients(the Marangoni effect) in an isothermal gas-liquid reaction process is investigatedbv usinx a linear theorv. Includins a deformation of free surface, effects of capil-lary and gravity waves are considered. These effects are important for the disturb-ance of small wave-numbers. It is shown that there exist two distinct mechanismsof instability, either with the essential effects of surface deformation or withoutthem. For the former, the critical Marangoni number linearly depends on theratio of the Weber zuumber to the Crispation number and on the reaction para-meter, on the other hand, for the latter, it depends on the reaction parameter andthe diffusivity ratio. By considering different conditions at lower surface, twocases are treated in a similar manner and it is examined how these affect oninstability.
