Measurements of the attenuation of pulsed longitudinal sound at megahertz frequencies have been made below and above the melting temperature in two kinds ofhcp 'He crystals with the melting pressures of 32.5 and 60.0 aim. It was found thatthe attenuation in the solid increased gradually with temperature and then rapidlybelow the melting point; and that an appreciable amount of supercooling occurred inthe liquid when the temperature was decreased. The dependence of the attenuation onthe sound frequency revealed the overdamped resonance of crystal dislocations insolid helium. The temperature dependence o f the attenuation in the premelting regionof the solid was precisely studied. The results were analyzed on the basis of thevibrating dislocation model, and the density of dislocations in the crystal A was defer-mined as a function of temperature T. The dependence was well represented as AA.ArK/ {1 - (T /7'.)}, where A., K, and T. were constants. The characteristic temperalure T. was close to or slightly lower than the melting temperature in two kinds ofhelium crystals.
