A Study of Structural Phase Transitions in Antiferroelectric PbZrO_3 by Neutron Diffraction

Temperature dependence of neutron diffraction intensities of PbZr0. wasmeasured in the room-temperature antiferroelectric phase. Intensities of strongsuperlattice reflections with wave vectors q) : (I /4 1 /4 0) and qg : (l /2 1 /2 1 /2) showdifferent temperature dependence each other. Intensities of weak superlatticereflections with q.:(l/4 1/4 1/2)=q.-I-q. and products of intensities of reflec-lions with q. and q. show the same temperature dependence. The crystal structurepreviously determined by Fujishita et at. [ref. 4] was reexamined; the structurewas found to be described by a sum of modulations associated with lattice vibra-tional modes 13, 7?35 and R5..Successive phase transitions concerning these modulations were observed at233'C and at around 235'C on heating, and at around 235'C and at 228'C oncooling. Because the modulation with q. is associated with mode R.., anotherantiferroelectric structural modulation which exists only in the intermediateantiferroelectric phase is required. In fact, an appearance of superlattice reflec-tions with q.:(1/2 1/2 O) was observed only in the intermediate phase.
