Physical Properties of Magnetic 2-D Oxides Containing Cr^<3+>, (SrCaR)_2(Cr_xGa_<1-x>)O_4, (R=La or Sm)

X-ray, magnetic and differential thermal analysis studies show that SrLaCr03,ST3/4CQ1/4LlCI04 and SrSmCr0: isomorrhous; to tetrauonal KzNiF,t aremagnetically two-dimensional Heisenberg-like antiferromagrvets with N<Set fern-perature 7'N of 242 K, 270 K and 306 K, respectively. The exchange constant ofSrLaCr0.? estimated from the paramagnetic susceptibility consists with thatestimated from Stanley and Kaplan's formula for T. of a 2-D Heisenberg antifer-romagnet with an accuracy of several percents. The exchange striction is observedto be negative along a-axis and positive along c-a.xis for the substances studied.The strain components e., and e.. extrapolated to 0 K are -(6 -7) x IQ-' and-I((4x7) x 10 ', respectively. These values are about one tenth of the calculatedones. The N<Set temperatures in the diluted system SrLaCr,Ga. -.0. are expressedas 7'.(.X')=7'.(l)[1 -d(l -,v)] with #=3.6 in the composition range 0.825<.X'<I.
