An exact solution of the Stokes equations is given for the flow due to an infinite circular cylinder impulsively started to move from rest normal to its axis. It is found that the frictional and pressure drags experienced by the cylinder are exactly equal for all times after the start of the motion. Moreover, their expression is shown to be the same, apart from a constant factor, as that for the skin-friction on the cylinder impulsively started to move parallel its axis.
