A statistical thermodynamic theory is developed using the Bragg-Williams approximation. Fluctuation of orientation angle of the molecular chain about the long axis is considered. First-order phase transition is predicted. The observed lattice transformation at the transition point from orthorhombic to hexagonal is well explained.
