A statistical theory applicable to crystals of helical-chain molecules is developedin terms of the mean-field approximation; interchain potential energy whichcontains terms relevant to the screw displacements along the chain axis is takeninto account. Simultaneous equations of complex variables describing states ofthe system are obtained ; they are solved in several limited cases. Successive phasetransitions observed in polytetrafluoroethylene crystals with increasing tempera-lure at atmospheric pressure can be explained from the results.
