We investigate a spin-3/2 Ising model on a sqtrare lattice by using Monte Carlo (IVIC) simula-txons and a density unatrix renorrnalization grotrp (DMRG) method. We obtain jchase diagratnsof the ground state. We carried out the IC simulations in order to c?tIctrlate the critical temper-atvtre and the critical exponent 77. We estimate the critical exponents v, a and -y by using a finitesize scaling analysis. We also calculate the critical tetnperature, the central charge c and the crit-ical exponent v by vxsing the DMRG znethod. From the results obtained by the IC sirntr[ationsand by the DMRG rnethod, we discuss a tmniversality class of the systena. It is found that thevalues of critical exponents are determined by naeans of the degeneracy of the ground state, Thisresult strggests that the vtnivex'sality does not hold for the spin-3 /2 Ising model, Ftrrtherrnore wefind a possibility of a breakdown of tlae hyperscaling law. We also confirtn that the ferrimagneticphase exists in a parartaeter region where the grovnnd state 112lS a fotrrfoJd degeneracy, and thata transition between the ferrirnagnetic plaase and the ferrornagnetic phase exists in addition tothat between the ferromagnetic phase and the paramagnetic jchase.
