In Situ Absorption Spectra and ESR Measurements of Poly (trans-(2,2'-bithiophene-5-yl)-(2,2':5',2"-terthiophene-5-yl) ethylene) During Electrochemical Doping

The e1ectrocltex?tical, optical auacl magraetic properties of l)OIY(Z/'&77.5-(2,2'-bitlaiophene-5-yl)??(2,2':5',2 " -tertlaioplaeuae-5-yj)etlaylene), PBTTTE, during elec-troclaemical 7>-type doping have been imavestigated in comjaarison with tlaose ofpoly (7r*zz,s'-bis(thiophene-2-yl)ethylene), lrazts-PIE, by c)'clic voltanametry, /77 situ op-tical absor)ction spectra, and electron spin resonamvce (ESR) measurenaeuats. Tlue bamvdgap energy of PB'TTTE was evaluated to be 2.0 eV and about 0.1 eV larger than tlaatof tt'atzs-PIE. This result can be interpreted in tex'xns of a cltange in tlae torsion anglebetween neigltboring thiopltene rings. The spixa susceptibility determied by ESR xnea-surements increased from 2.4x 10 ' to 4.4x 10-'emu/mol ujvon doping and tlaendecreased sliglttly. Claatages in optical absorption v;)cectra and ESR spectra suggest tlteformation of polaron and/or bipolaron upon clopiutg. Tl?e spin dextsity evaluatedfrom the spin susceptibility w'as incouasistent with tlte dojcant density. Tlaat is, eve?a atliglatly doped state the newly developed s)cecies tttrn into 7v-type spinless bupolarouas.
