Solutions of the Broer-Kaup system describing one-dimensional shallow waterwaves are discussed by using its trilinear form. It is shown that the soliton solutionshave tlte interesting properties that (i) their speed is determined by a dispersion rcla-tion up to an overall constant, and (ii) there is a )vossibility of fusion and fission ofsolitons. These properties reflect the particular six-ucture of the trilinear form.
