The absorption sjcectra due to tlve 4f=5cl transitions iua Ce" centres laave beexameasured witla tlte use of YAG:Ce" single crystals w'ith a lattice coxtcezat?'ation[Ce"].=(1.28f0.05)%. TIIC data are almost iuade)cendent of the spectral belxaviourof a reference spectrum wlaose absorption coutstautts are - 2 cm ' at tlte higltest, sincetlte absorption conastants of 129 cm and 50 cm ' lcave been derived, relative to tl?e-1reference spectru?n, at tlte strongest peaks in tlte d) auad dc regiouas, respectively. Theabsorption area 32.3 cm-' eV naeasured on the stroaagest d7-bauad suggests that abouta quarter of tlte Ce-coxacentration, [Ce"]., added iua the mixture of t]?e startimagjcowdeu's is incorporated into [Ce"].- as YAG:Co". It is for?ad tlaat tlte ltighest-energy lying dz bau?d is located at 6.06 eV, in agreccmeuat xvith 6.07. eV for the corre-spondirag band jccak ixt tlae excitation spectrum and tlvat tlte ratio of tlae absor)ctionarea of d7 to that of dc is nearly 2:3.
