The effects of the flux hole on the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability of thespheromak are investigated. The plasma is assumed to be confined in a drum-type fluxconserver and is assumed to be in a force-free magnetic field. A numerical code to in-tegrate the linearized MHD equation is developed and the lit-near growth rates of then=I mode are evaluated as functions of the flux-hole size and the prolatenessparameter L/R. Here n is the toroidal mode number, and L and R denote the heightand the radius of the flux conserver. l'he results of computations show that the fluxhole has the destabilizing effects, but stable configurations exist when the flux hole issmall and the flux conserver is o blate enough to satisfy L /R< 1.8 'f 0.1.[spheromak, compact toroid, magnetohydrodynamic stability, force free, flux lj hole, current driven mode, theoryll
